Established in 1981, the A.E. Howell Wildlife Conservation Center and Spruce Acres Refuge has
become one of Maine's finest wildlife rehabilitation centers. We are located on 64 acres on Lycette
Road in North Amity, Maine.
We are licensed by state and federal agencies for the care and release of wildlife. Working closely
with game wardens and other wildlife officials on both sides of the border, we have developed a
reputation for handling some of nature's most difficult rehabilitation cases. Because certain animals
cannot be fully rehabilitated and released due to serious injury or other factors, they become
permanent residents of the refuge. We are certified by the USDA as wildlife exhibitors. The center
is a non-profit facility that is funded solely by membership, private grants and donations. We
receive no state or federal funding.
Our Mission is to preserve Maine's natural resources and provide educational programs encouraging
the practice of proper wildlife conservation, natural resource management and environmental
protection.
